From Staying Cool to Being Uncool: The Evolution of the Water Bottle

November 14, 2019 by Abbie Meadows

Based on a report from National Geographic, engineer Nathaniel Wyeth revolutionized the beverage industry by patenting polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in 1973. The first plastic bottles were built to withstand the pressure of carbonated liquids and to be a cheaper alternative to glass bottles. Even though that goal was attained, little did Nathaniel know what a dark corner this revolutionary invention would eventually turn.

Perrier and Evian were the first to adopt the plastic bottle, followed by Pepsi Co. and Coca-Cola in the mid-nineties. According to the Beverage Marketing Corp., water sales skyrocketed by 284% between 1994-2017. Today, globally, more than a million plastic bottles are sold EVERY SINGLE MINUTE—that’s insane. Plastic bottles and caps rank as the world’s third-most collected items at beach cleanups in more than 100 countries, says the Ocean Conservancy’s annual report. That’s had a devastating impact on the ocean’s environment.

According to Recycle Nation, many brands have made promises to reduce the use of plastics by only using bottles that are made out of more than 50% recycled material or by finding new ways to responsibly dispose of the bottles once they’re thrown away. But corporations are moving very slowly while plastic water bottle sales remain the highest they’ve ever been. We have to ask ourselves, how can we make tomorrow more sustainable than yesterday?  At Communicorp, we’re always thinking about unexpected ways for a brand to promote themselves. We see this issue as a perfect opportunity to promote a brand and make a global impact at the same time. Yes, we have thousands of items to choose from, but why not choose items that help make the ocean a cleaner, safer place?
