Creating an emotional connection through promotional products

Posted on September 18, 2015

Did you know that 83 percent of customers like to receive a product with an advertising message on it? Trends indicate that the average customer still wants a special touch from their favorite brand – which leads to the customer doing business with that company. And if customers really like the product, they will actually keep the promotional item for up to four years. That’s a long time for this amount of brand exposure!

“Promotional products provide a great way for companies to make an emotional connection with their audience,” said Joy Hamilton, senior account executive at Communicorp. “When a company gives a branded product to their customers, it not only makes them feel valued and important, but it also demonstrates that you see them as a human being and more than another ‘sale.’”

In fact, there are a number of ways for companies to emotionally connect with customers through promotional products. The products can be used as giveaways at tradeshows, thank-you gifts during the holidays, appreciation tokens to employees or icebreakers during sales appointments. Before launching your next promotional product campaign, be sure to factor in these best practices so you can be well-equipped.

  1. Choose products that support your theme.

Once you select a theme for your marketing campaign, be sure to select products that complement the campaign to have a stronger impact on your customers. For example, when Communicorp launched their “Be a Big Kahuna” Campaign for Aflac’s Pacific Territory, they used Hawaiian-themed promo products like a bottle of sunscreen branded with messaging about the event, a coconut tagged with a miniature brochure and a beach bag stuffed with fliers about the campaign. The promo items were well-received by Aflac representatives and drove a tremendous amount of excitement about the campaign.

  1. Make sure products are usable.

When selecting promo items, make sure you are choosing products that your target audience will use. Items like ink pens and water bottles tend to have a high usage rate; therefore, customers are more likely to keep them longer. When appropriate, consider using premium products like branded lotions, spa products, golf balls and sports items as they tend to have a higher perceived value – which customers really enjoy.

  1. Avoid using the same, old products.

With such a variety of promo products available, you don’t have to stick to just coffee mugs and T-shirts. Consider giving customers branded items like USB flash drives with your marketing collateral uploaded on it; phone chargers to use on the go; or selfie camera remote controls that make it easier to take a picture of themselves on a cell phone.
