Communicorp’s speedmaster exceeds expectations

Since its installation in the fall of 2008, the Heidelberg XL 105-10P Speedmaster printing press at Communicorp’s Columbus, Georgia plant is proving itself a winner.

Designed and manufactured in Wiesloch, Germany, the Speedmaster was engineered to boost productivity levels. This machine replaced two printing presses at Communicorp. At the contract signing last summer, Marcia Bonsell, Communicorp’s Vice President of Production predicted that “efficiencies gained at this level will result in immediate benefits to Communicorp’s customer base,” and this has become a reality.

In full operation now, the press perfects at a rated speed of 15,000 iph and has maintained that speed on 99.4% of all jobs run. The CutStar roll feeder has reduced load change times by 55%. In fewer than 12 weeks of operation, Communicorp produced 7,070,000 double-sided press sheets and almost 90,000 single-sided sheets, work product that would have taken an additional two weeks using the two presses that were replaced. Additional expediency has been realized in the workflow with press sheets being instantly complete and ready for the bindery.

Faster turnarounds, less time on the press, computer-driven, dynamic color and the economy of utilizing paper rolls instead of sheets are some of the benefits that Communicorp’s customers are enjoying already from the installation of the Heidelberg Speedmaster. Communicorp’s investment in serving its customers has been a very successful one.
